One key aspect to a healthy lawn that is often overlooked is aerating. Core aeration is important because it removes compacted soil and thatch buildup. It allows air, water, and nutrients to penetrate surface soils and reach the root systems where these three items are needed most to promote deeper root growth. It also reduces water runoff. Core aeration is often referred to as “plug aeration” in which, by mechanical means, a plug of soil about 3” in length is removed from the turf.
